  • Babbel Live sees 300% increase in subscriptions and 400% increase in revenue from H1

Babbel, the world’s most sold language learning ecosystem, ends the year with record-breaking November sales of 20M USD, 9% of which were driven by a successful scale-up of the new product Babbel Live virtual classrooms and Babbel for Business, which targets corporate clients. Overall, the November 2021 Billed Sales surpassed November 2020 by more than 30% - a very successful end to a year which saw Babbel grow its business significantly. On Black Friday alone, Babbel generated more than 1 million USD in sales in one day--the highest single day earnings in Babbel’s history. The November results confirm the continuation of Babbel’s projected growth, matching an overall trend towards online language learning that has accelerated during the 2020 onset of the pandemic.

Moving quickly in its evolution, Babbel has successfully scaled the two newest additions to the platform: Babbel Live, a virtual classroom for personalised learning, and Babbel for Business, a tailored offering for corporate clients. Both growth drivers, Babbel Live and Babbel for Business, in November comprise 9% of Babbel’s business.

Arne Schepker, CEO of Babbel, says, “After building the world's first language learning app, Babbel is now building the language learning platform of the future. We are undoubtedly making the right choice at the right time, expanding from a single-function app to a platform of varied, dynamic learning experiences that profit consumers as well as business customers. And more importantly, we see our learners putting the new experiences to use, with major uptakes of Babbel Podcasts and our live classes.”

As for Babbel Live, the roll-out of the product met all of its planned milestones: in addition to a 300% increase in subscriptions and a 400% increase in revenue from H1, Babbel Live is currently seeing tens of thousands of learners taking part in up to 15,000 classes per month. The classes are run by hundreds of certified teachers and used globally, supporting learners in more than 10 time zones.

Julie Hansen, CRO and U.S. CEO of Babbel, says, “We have become the gold standard for the way people learn languages online. With Babbel Live and Babbel for Business, we are scaling two new products and increasing Babbel’s footprint within the $55 billion global language learning market. Understanding that both live courses and corporate offerings need to be premium quality to gain ground in a competitive market, we see these segments as natural fits for Babbel.”

Babbel for Business onboarded more than 5,000 new corporate learners in November alone, while the product continues to receive extraordinary customer satisfaction reviews and a Revenue Renewal Rate above 100%. Essentially, corporate clients who start learning with Babbel for Business, stay with Babbel for Business. At present, Babbel for Business works with more than 1,000 companies, across various industries.

Babbel’s blended language learning platform consists of the Babbel App, grounded in an expert-led learning methodology; Babbel Live virtual classes with qualified teachers; award-winning Babbel Podcasts, downloaded in the millions; and Babbel for Business (B2B) serving corporate clients. Babbel believes the future of learning is in variety and guidance, with a human touch. This combination supports learners in acquiring their desired speaking abilities and ultimately, fulfills Babbel’s purpose of creating mutual understanding through language.

About Babbel

Babbel develops and operates an ecosystem of interconnected online language learning experiences and is driven by the purpose of creating mutual understanding through language. This means building products that help people connect and communicate across cultures. The Babbel App, Babbel Live, Babbel Podcasts and Babbel for Business products focus on using a new language in the real world, in real situations, with real people. And it works: Studies by linguists from institutions such as Michigan State University, Yale University and the City University of New York demonstrated the efficacy of Babbel’s language learning methods.

The key is a blend of humanity and technology. Babbel offers more than 60,000 lessons across 15 languages, hand-crafted by nearly 200 didactics experts, with user behaviors continuously analysed to shape and tweak the learner experience. This results in constantly adapting, interactive content with live classes, games, podcasts and videos that make understanding a new language easy, from Spanish to Indonesian.

Because Babbel is for everyone, its team is as diverse as its content. From its headquarters in Berlin and its U.S. office in New York, 1000 people from more than 80 nationalities represent the backgrounds, characteristics and perspectives that make all humans unique.
